On Saturday, 11 November, Marine Corps League Post #1231 held it’s annual ball celebrating the 242nd Birthday of our beloved Marine Corps. A total of 112 attended and a good time was had by all. Active duty Marines, retired Marines, Midshipmen from the University of Illinois, and Marine supporters all joined in the celebration. A wonderful buffet meal was provided by Leah Bodine and her crew. Music was provided by Ms. Diane Ducey who also assisted with the ceremony. Commander David “Dutch” Powell, USN Retired, was our guest speaker and gave an excellent presentation of his career and active duty adventures. Commandant Bob Kappes presented Detachment Awards to several detachment members. Two noteworthy recipients were Ron Dowell, who was recognized as the “Marine of the Year”, and Ron Castle, who was presented with the “Barstow” Award. This award is an intra-detachment award honoring a Detachment officer who has went above and beyond in carrying out their duties. A very successful celebration in the opinion of all. Many thanks go out to Ron for chairing the Ball committee as he at times sweated bullets to see that 2017 was a banner celebration!
